Business owners; Get permission to put your chairs on city sidewalks
The walkways in front of the small businesses around 6th street and Central in Albuquerque, New Mexico are public thoroughfares. Matthew Fuemmeler, the owner and sole-proprietor of The Boiler Monkey seems to believe he owns the sidewalk in front of his business and should be able to place tables for his customers there without getting permission from the city. The coffee shop boss also indicated he would pass the cost of more expensive paper cups and containers to his customers so they could pay for making Duke City cleaner and greener.
Sarah Hartford, female owner of Hartford Square Health Food Restaurant, stated she didn't know about the regulation regarding chairs and table on public sidewalk in front of her business.
Matthew and Sarah cannot claim ignorance of the law. Both have to check out the city code before they usurp space on property they do not own.
