A Heads Up on Balance Transfer Checks

We received this Chase Slate balance transfer checks offer from Florian Egg-Krings who is the general manager of the slate portfolio. Florian was refreshingly honest and straightforward about the fees and interest you would be charged if you did not pay off all new purchase and transferred balances in full each month.



Actually, this is not much of a rant, but I want to make sure you understood what Florian is saying. Let's say that you have a balance transfer of $3000 in the month of January along with $400 in new purchases. You will get charged interest and fees immediately on the $400 worth of new purchases unless you pay the entire $3400 balance in full on your billing cycle due date!!

I learned this the hard way with our power rewards Bank America Visa Card. The only way to win with balance transfer cards is to use the card for ONLY THAT! Chop up the card and pay it off the day the 0% APR promotional rate switches to 11.99% or whatever it is for your particular deal!
