Too Much Drama in Isla Vista

Some of the backlash from the mass murder in Isla Vista, California is certainly justified, but some of the commentary is irrational with no basis. Women attend frat parties in skin tight pants for a reason. They are trying to attract a mate or have sex. Still, if the guy makes unwanted advance, the girl always has the right to tell him to get lost. If he continues to be aggressive and won't back down, he should be disciplined or arrested.

Please, let's not forget that what Elliot Rodger did is exceptionally rare. The city of Detroit has gone years without this type of horrific event ever happening! Sure Detroit has all kinds of violence, but nothing that matches the nature of what happened in the convenience store near the Santa Barbara university.

I think the commentary of Maddie Clerides, while very understandable, is somewhat of an overreaction to an outlier event. Did she live in fear before gunman's rampage? She speaks of the "difficult part of our reality" which is apparently the reality of all young women on college campuses.

Please let me comment on the following snippet from Jennifer Medina's New York Times article:

In dozens of interviews, women voiced concerns about incessantly hearing jokes about rape or what physical features make a woman desirable. At some parties, several women said, their buttocks have been grabbed at the entry door.(the women, of their own volition, attend these testosterone charged parties dressed in sexually provocative attire as horny as the males who are squeezing their ass. If a guy patted them on the tush in the school library, then he should be suspended from school or issued a citation in public library. Horny males of all species are aggressive  and fight to impress females)

“I do live in fear — this is a difficult part of our reality,” said Maddie Clerides, 19, a sophomore majoring in global studies. Ms. Clerides said she was not alone in her worries. After the shootings, many women left the campus in fear or at the urging of their parents.(Nancy Yang used the mass shooting as a chance to drop the term misogyny into the list of charges against all men. To be fair, when women dress provocatively and frequent late night frat parties some latitude should be extended compared to an outing to Target)
