NBA Score Keeper Error that prevented a game 7

First, I want the reader to know that this writer is not trying to detract from the stellar performance of the Portland Trailblazers in round one of the NBA playoffs this year. They eliminated a very talented Houston Rockets team in 6 games with a thrilling close out win in Portland where Damian Lillard canned a walk off 3 pointer as Chandler Parsons was late on his defensive assignment.

Here comes the rant. Parsons had grabbed an offensive rebound and put the ball back in the bucket to give the Rockets a 98-96 lead with 0.9 seconds remaining(according to the score keeper) to set up the game winning heroics by Lillard.

Parson's layup off the glass after the rebound was bouncing around on the rim with 2.5 seconds remaining level with the rim at 1 second. The score keeper stopped the clock with 0.9 seconds before the ball even made it through the net!

None of the Rocket's coaching staff noticed this error or intentional premature stoppage of the official game clock thus leaving precious time for Lillard's shot which sent the fans into pandemonium. This deprived the Rockets of a Game 7 in Houston which they had earned by beating Portland Head to Head in the regular season.

Also credit to Damian, as Jonathan Feigen of the Chronicle points out, for changing the play which was designed for him to run to the ball-side corner. Lillard, instead, sprinted towards the inbound passer with Parsons cut off from the play but in hot pursuit not reaching Lillard in time to effectively contest the the shot.

Finally, did you notice that the in bounds passer just walked off after he threw the pass to Lillard figuring he had no chance to sink the bucket!  What a game!!!

Please take a look at the basket ball starting to pass through the net in the picture below. The scorekeeper stopped the game clock when Lillard's shot was even higher in the net!  Rocket's fans have a right to be irritated for being deprived of a GAME 7 at the Toyota Center.
