Totients are Cool!

So it is a weird thing how the mind makes bizarre connections between seemingly unrelated events. Was kickin back watching some Turner Classic Movies when a military officer said you can identify Richard Burton's character by parallel scars 3 cm apart on his wrist.  The film title which costarred Clint Eastwood was titled Where Eagles Dare (1968)

This dude who does a damn good job of explaining mathematics popped into my head along the lines of how many hair follicles could be expected to be found on the skin between the scars?!?!?!?   Jeez Louise WTF.  Michael Penn answers much harder questions than that right?!?  Perhaps it was because my son in Colorado is losing his hair and always talks about Math Stud Doctor Penn.

Everybody has a lot of time on their hands these days and I use some of my time to Google old friends. I found out the referenced mathematician has a killer YouTube channel that is really close to 100,000 subscribers which is the threshold one must reach to make killer bank Ad revenue. From what I can tell the talented communicator and teacher has stalled a little short of this lucrative subscription number.

He seemed a little desperate when he listed the names of 3 of his colleagues or maybe former students in an apparent attempt break through the 100,000 YouTube ceiling. Nate Mankovich, Hanbo Shao, and Joe Howard just subscribe to his YouTube channel already so you can bond some more over Sophie Germain's Identity.  Who was Sophie anyway? A mutual crush?

Let me tell you what I learned about math from Doctor Penn.  Totient of 12 is 4  since the the numbers 1,5,7, 11  don't have anything in common with 12. There is a formula that keeps you from having to do it manually 12(1-1/2)(1-1/3) = 4.  The 2 and 3 are the prime parts of 12.

Also 5 raised to the 4rth power leaves a remainder of 1 when divided by 12. A German cat who went blind had a lot to do with building all this up. There is special number in finance named after him.

Michael, if you are like some of my professor friends, you have bounced around from one university to the other and I wish you the best of luck monetizing your 5 standard deviations from the mean teaching prowess!! In the meantime I will watch more of your videos in lieu of alcohol consumption.

BTW has Red Pen Blue Pen reached the 100,000 subscription promised land?
