The Right to Carry a Gun in a Store

I don't know if it is really fair to characterize this as a rant. What follows is the exceptionally contentious issue of the right to bear arms. Does it mean that you carry weapons into WalMart or Target?

Target, in Minneapolis, just made their position clear as Kavita Kuman describes in her well written article.

Target Corporation on Wednesday took a stand against customers who bring firearms into its stores. "This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to a simple belief: Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create," John Mulligan, the company's acting CEO, said in a statement.

The gun carrying law in Texas states that permit holders can carry their weapon anywhere unless otherwise forbidden to do so by private entities. Apparently, this law does not hold in Minnesota. So a man from Texas, who believes it is his God given right to have a gun with him anytime he wants, better be careful when he crosses the Lone Star State border.

It is certainly understandable that more of the nation's citizens would want to carry their weapons in the wake of all the public shootings. A very tough issue to evaluate is the right to carry versus the right of a business owner to prohibit it in their privately owned enterprise.

I do side with opponents of the NRA who are unreasonable in their belief anybody and everybody have the right to purchase and carry automatic and semi-automatic weapons. I also applaud Target Retailers for having the courage of their convictions to prohibit guns in their stores. It could cost them some customers, but they apparently feel it will cost them more customers if guns are allowed!
