Did you have this guy as your Accountant

A New Mexico accountant has pleaded not guilty to charges that he committed fraud on the federal and state unemployment insurance system for around $1.3 million. Accountant Jasonn Gonzales of Velarde has been indicted along with another man after ripping off the NM department of  Workforce Solutions by making fraudulent claims  for unemployment benefits. The false unemployment claims appear to have been filed in behalf of citizens in and around the city of Ojo Caliente according to the news blogger Alex Goldsmith.  More details were provided in the state briefs section of your local newspaper.

I am not certain if Gonzales helped people file their personal returns, but if he had ever prepared my IRS tax return I would be awful nervous about right now. A guy who would effectively steal $1.3 million from hard working taxpayers would certainly have no compunction about doing a half ass job on personal tax returns.

Wilma Hayes, a tax professional at H&R Block, has some wonderful tips on how to avoid an unscrupulous accountant. She points out that most personal accountants could not do anything nasty without you being their personal accomplice. There are many controls and checks that contain and prevent fraudulent activity at that level. She adds that rather than worrying about somebody who is sleazy, be certain to hire an accountant who is is up to date and current on latest tax law revisions or changes that could give you the best return.
